Eye Examination

At Baird Optometrists we take extra time to ensure that you receive a comprehensive eye examination, assessing your vision and overall eye health.

Our fully trained and experienced optometrists carry out all clinical tests, using advanced equipment to evaluate refractive errors, check for conditions like glaucoma or cataracts, and ensure that your eyes are in optimal condition.

Regular eye examinations at Baird Optometrists can help detect issues early, allowing for timely intervention and maintaining the clarity of your vision.

Our Specialist Equipment

Our Topcon KR-800 autorefractor/keratometer takes automatic measurements of your spectacle prescription in just a few seconds. Although these results require refinement by our Optometrists, the KR-800 makes the process much quicker and easier. The KR-800 also measures the curvature of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye), aiding contact lens fitting.

For most tests, we no longer need to use heavy, uncomfortable frames and lenses. Our Topcon CV-5000 Pro phoropter is suspended in front of you and automatically changes through lenses during your vision assessment. This makes the refraction stage of the eye examination quicker, easier and less stressful.

iCare Tonometer

No more ‘Puff of Air’. That’s right, no more terrifying puff of air on to the eye. Instead, we use iCare rebound tonometers which use a tiny disposable probe that bounces off the front of your eye to measure the intraocular pressure. It’s MUCH more comfortable and most patients feel nothing at all.

Smartfield Visual Field Analyser

The Oculus Smartfield provides a quick, detailed assessment of your peripheral vision. It aids in diagnosing conditions like glaucoma and other eye and brain issues affecting vision. The positioning is comfortable, allowing patients to wear their distance glasses during the examination, eliminating the need for an eye patch. Our standard assessment lasts only 90 seconds per eye, with a more detailed examination taking just 3 minutes, significantly faster than many other field screeners.

3D-Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) Retinal Imaging

OCT retinal imaging has transformed eyecare. With its detailed retina imaging capabilities, our optometrists make better decisions on potential glaucoma diagnoses and detect pathologies invisible to traditional methods. We strongly recommend OCT imaging as a vital part of your regular eye exam. Though not covered by the NHS, our practices offer this service for a nominal £20 fee, reflecting our investment in cutting-edge technology.

Slit-Lamp Camera

Our Topcon DC4 slit-lamp camera enables us to image the structures at the front of the eye. We can show you the images on the computer screen and explain our findings.
